Thinking Of Owning A Betta

I looked a few minutes after I posted right down the bottom of the forum :p

I think ill look for some apple snails! they look suitable

Bettas are almost always nice to snails, that's a good idea actually.

I love snails... they give so much to the cause of innocent fish, lol. If my LFS tells people the chemical process of cycling, they freak, run off somewhere else, are told to leave the tank sit for a day/week/fortnight then add fish, and all the fish die and they give up.
So MY LFS tells them to buy a snail or eight, go home, feed the snails every day. So they put fish food in the tank, and the rotting fish food and the snail poop cycles the tank. It's a shame the snails often die, but I don't think they suffer as much as fish do, if they suffer at all.

Ok, so an update :)

I went out today and bought a tank (http://www.rockbottomaquatics.co.uk/prod.php?prod=467) although the price on this thing is £20 less then what I bought mine for :(.

Now to go buy some pure ammonia and a syringe! Excitedd!

Oooh...

Updates! Updates! Updates!

You have no idea what a nice change it is to see somebody actually CYCLING a betta tank... they get a really raw deal, just because they are capable of surviving in tiny/grotty tanks doesn't mean they should have to.

ok so I put the gravel in my tank, got a heater for it and set it all up!

I must say the filter looks wierd, its called a 'trickle filter' and its got sponges near the hood and a pipe from the pump to the filter? also has a little tube from the pump which I have no idea where it goes? The manual really hasnt helped me with it either!

pump is a HY -301 pump btw.

when i'd be getting my betta i was going to get good condition one but as soon as you said better rescuing i feel like i should do the same. all i was thinking bad conditiona mean it wont last long but its just the conditions their kept in that makes them bad and as soon as i take on ehome he should be happy and healthy :D

i now feel like a man :p

added the water etc today, going to begin fishless cycle probably saturday!

Is the pump REALLY needed for my betta? looking at mine it looked rather strong, the currect flew to the other side of the tank so i think if a Betta had been in there itd have blown him away!

What you are cycling is the filter, so if you dont' have a filter, then cycling is totally pointless. I strongly recommend you keep the filter because it will save you a lot of water changing, I have bettas without filters in one gallon jars and it's a pain in the neck WCing them all every third day. There is a good article somewhere in the articles section of this forum on how to make a filter guard to reduce the flow. Personally I had more success by ramming a lump of filter wool into the intake.
