I'm thinking of getting otos. LFS told me to get at least three (20 gal heavily planted tank with 1 candystripe plec, 2 corys and 6 tetras). Do they really need a school or will a solo or pair do fine? Thanks.

Hi, I have four in a 70ltr aquarium but they do need a heavily planted established tank with algae to browse on. In a sparse tank with no algae they don't seem to last very long.

Hi, 3 is bare minimum. 4-6 is best in that tank providing you have a fairly matured tank. It is also best to supliment their diet with something like TetraPlecomin algae enriched food at night (lights off) when they are feeding most.

Ottos are mostly wild caught so best not to buy unless they have been at the lfs a while. They can die for no apparant reason when first bought, probably due to transportation stress. If you get 6 you may only end up with 4 anyway.

Also, more importantly, your cory stock needs adding to. They are happier in a shoal of at least 4 and SAME breed :good:
