There are a bunch of helpful pinned topics in the nano section that will help you get started. The requirements and such are in there so check it out...

Here's a link if you have trouble finding it... Nano Basics

As for the difficulty, I find it quite easy once you get a hang of the water changes and keeping the parameters, salt level, etc. all stable. And for me the only time I had a hard time keeping up with it was in the cycling period. Right now all I have to worry about is feedings, weekly water changes, and filter changes. I don't usually keep up with the parameters though. Too lazy  . But so far I've never had a break out of any algae. *knocks on wood*

Agreed, definitely head over to either the chit chat section or the nano section and read through the stickies, those will give you a good idea of what to expect. Then, have a read through some journals to see what people are doing with their tanks :)

quick bit of advice, i would deffinatly stick to the forums for questions of anything you are unsure about, some LFS will just try and sell you things.

trust me when you get past the cycling stage you will wonder what all the fuss is about, patience is the key to a good marine tank IMO

A quick run down for you:

yes it's a lot of work, testing water, changing water, sotcking the tank, dealingwith possible diseases, etc. etc, etc. But you knwo what in the end when you really sitck with it and everyday your get to wake up to a beautiful addition to your home/apartment it's awesome to know that you put it together! I think the best thing you can do is just do a lot of reading on the forums, cause these are a great bunch of guyz. And i can say that from only being here a couple days! Anyway best of luck to you on your possible dive into your newest addiction! lol GOOD LUCK!

Lucky bastard

Although I do like freshwater tanks as well, I would be willing to state that saltwater tanks are better in every way, except one: expense. But yet, I'm a 15 year old kid with only sporadic jobs, and I've managed to set up and maintain a tank for a year and am now working on a 190 gallon system that should be up within a month. I do not get "spoiled" by my parents, either; we are all broke in my house right now

Hey; I bought it all by myself

It's actually not a 190 gallon tank; it is a 90 gallon (just bought; with Christmas and birthday money) next to a 77 gallon (have had for a couple years, but bought it with 'paper route' money  ), all connected together with a 33 gallon sump (my Dad's tank originally; it is older than I am and he got it for $10).

Good to hear somebody else with an old tank. My 45 is circa 1991 so that would make it as old as you I think :)
