If one of your neons has died and started rotting in a corner somewhere (or even finished rotting in a corner somewhere) that might be the cause of your ammonia (and therefore nitrite)?

Large water change to reduce levels and a deep substrate cleaning, and keep an eye on it is all I can suggest.

Agree with above!^^

Neons need a tank that is matured, which is usually a tank that has been established for at least 6+months.

When you where gone, I bet you had some slight fluctuation in your water parameters, which is really common in newly setup/cycled tanks, and these fluctuation more than likely killed that one neon.

Now, that one neon is most likely rotting somewhere in the tank and is giving off ammonia. And trust me, a dead fish will give off a substantial amount of ammonia that will add up quite quickly!

So, try your hardest to search about the tank had see if you can't fond the dead fish and get it out as soon as you can!

Then do a large, 50%+, water change to get your ammonia and nitrite back under control.

Thanks all
right

here what i just done tonight ,
Done about 20% change as best i can do tonight
had a good shuffty round try to find fish
cannot find him

might have to move a few plants to find him

they look bit happy either that all they all a bit dazzled by me rooting round

i will have a better look tomorrow
carry out another water change

If you've been away for a few days you might not find a body at all - after all fish are scavengers and will eat another fish if it's dead. Food is food n all that... and esp with a fish as small as a neon - don't be surprised if it's just one of those mysterious disappearences that's followed by a spike!

Yes, excellent advice from CC and everyone up there, so agree with all. If I read your last post correctly Ginga, it was late and you didn't have time to do more than a 20% water change. That's fine but just wanted to verify that you realize that doing a couple of much larger changes than that is in order because you have fish looking unhappy. I'd be getting in a couple of 70% ones with conditioning and rough temp matching and of course gravel cleaning to get it accomplished. If its a small mini-spike then the traces should go away and not come back on followup testing.
