I have a female swordtail that looks very thin but she is eating (great appetite in fact) and also has normal poop (brown). I treated with Parasite Guard in case it's internal parasites, but she looks the same. I don't want to keep medicating for no reason if it's not necessary.

Thoughts? Should I just let her be and not worry about it?

Is her tummy area sunken in?
Check the fish anus to see if it's enlarged, or red and inflamed?
Have you every seen any red hair like worms sticking out of the anus?
Do you have any fish showing signs of a curved spine?
Does the fish swim on there sides sometimes?
Has the fish darkened in colour, or look pale?
Has she just given birth to fry?
How often do you feed your fish?
What types of food do you feed your fish?

Sorry for all the questions, just need to rule some factors out to help find the problem.

Is her tummy area sunken in? yes - she looks very skinny
Check the fish anus to see if it's enlarged, or red and inflamed? none of these
Have you every seen any red hair like worms sticking out of the anus? no
Do you have any fish showing signs of a curved spine? no
Does the fish swim on there sides sometimes? no she looks and acts completely normal other than being skinny
Has the fish darkened in colour, or look pale? no
Has she just given birth to fry? no she has looked like this since I got her (>1 month)
How often do you feed your fish? once a day
What types of food do you feed your fish? hikari micropellets, hikari microwafers, frozen bloodworms

She is very active and like I mentioned, she has a great appetite as well.

Thank you for replying!

Start feeding the fish twice a day. Introduce some green veg into there diet.
It helps the fish from getting constipated.

Bacterial infections can also cause fish to be skinny. Also she not showing any signs of internal parasites if her waste is brown.

Causes of fish to look thin are.
Internal bacteria infection.
Internal parasites.
External parasites.
Vitamin deficiency.
Not feeding enough.

I think I would isolate her and try and internal bacteria med for now.
If the fish shows are more symptoms listed above, please get back to the board.

What internal bacteria medication would you recommend? Like I said in my original post, I treated with Parasite Guard which contains metronidazole (kills internal protozoa and bacteria).

Maracyn.
Keep an eye on water stats as maracyn can knock your good bacteria in your filter.

Parasite Guard. Does it list the ingredients on the bottle, or instructions leaflet?
