Hey all,
i know we are from ALL over the globe around here so some of you may or may not know, about the absolutely increadible ice storm that the northeast US just went thru at the end of last week. Ive lived here for my entire 28 years and never experienced such chaotic disater from a winter storm. about 1/2 - 3/4 inch of ice on EVERYTHING. needless to say, the destruction of trees and power lines was immense. i was out of power for 82 hours (but who's counting, right?) and having electricity back is actually sort of surreal. for days all you could hear was the hum of chainsaws and generators. Tens of thousands in the area are still without power despite an increadable effort from the power company and many will not be fully restored until around friday, they're saying. All's melted now and various limbs still falling from high winds, so surely more outtages to follow. but i wanted to share my story with other fishy folks.
SOMEHOW, without heaters or filters or lights for the plants, every single one of my fish survived (even my khuli that i never see is accounted for)!!! i am so relieved for this as i worried tremendously about them doing daily water changes with warm water to TRY to get the temps up and nh4 down. Thankfully it was only bitter cold for a day adn then warmed up quite a bit, but our house temp hovered around 64 degrees F (18 C). While traveling out for my morning coffee the second powerless day, i heard the cashier tell another coustomer that all her fish had died overnight. i asked her more and she lost over 40 tropicals (how sad)...im sure this story can be repeated over and over again. How mine all made it, i dont know but im sure glad they did.
but now my tanks are a mess. im sure the filoter bacs died in the canister on my turtle tank, abd the plants in the betta tank dont look so hot- COVERED in bga :( have tried salt dips for plants and over dosing ferts with great success in combatting algae in the past, so might try that. gonna head over to planted section and ask the folks there for some advice. around 6 months of wonderfully stable tanks and now sqyare one.
but im greatful to still have my turtle and fishies so worth the effort all over again.
just thought id share with all here. Hope everyone is well in their neck of the woods!
cheers

I'm really glad to hear that all your fish survived! I've been following the story on the news here, and it does look really bad. Reporters said last night that power may not be restored to some areas until after Christmas! YIKES!

Thank goodness you still have all your fish! Yeah that was some storm. I'm in Jersey so we only got a huge amount of rain. I heard you guys got it real bad, a lot of people I know lost power.

Holy cow - what an awful experience.
Glad you guys - humans and fish - didn't freeze over, and at least the 64F isn't pipe-freezing weather either.
But congrats on keeping your fish and turtle alive, and I hope you manage to get the BGA dead and keep it there.
Sometimes seems as though you have two main options - everything at once or one thing after another, doesn't it?

The experience was not overly awful apart from not having power. it actually was very pretty and quite amazing to see all the damage in the neighborhood. i do feel fortunate to still have my little friends- just got a lot of water changes ahead of me...glad i bought that new bottle of dechlor last week (hmmmm-premonition??) still lots of folks without powre, my sister being one of them and they are telling her wed evening (she lives in a remote area) just feel very greatful.

up the tanks temp by about 2 or 3 degrees Farenheit in case of more power shortages over the next few days (do it slowly) and have blankets ready to cover the tanks to keep heat in or even better bubblewrap. can you still do water changes with warm water?

i never ran out of warm water as our heater runs on gas (so at least i could shower all those days:)...the tanks temps are up and everyone looking great!!! they were a bit zoomy when the filter kicked back in, but have all settled down and are behaving as normal. the blankets were defo used and are handy just in case. so i think im over the hurdle of danger for the fish as far as cold goes (i say this as another sloppy storm heads our way for tomorrow/thurs)...now just recycle everything...grrr...but small price to pay to see my fishies doing well.

last time we had major outages a bunch of my fish didnt make it, only the bettas were able to survive. when doing your water changes make sure to double or tripple the dechlornator, in case rapidly melting ice and snow could cause any damage to the water supply and they up the chlorine to just be sure.

if you wanted to pay for the postage and box I would send you some mature media for free.

ooo yeah that storm was bad! I live in Kingston ny only about an hour and a half below you. We lost power for about 12 hours, but all of the fishies are fine. I heard we're supposed to get another 5-6 inches of snow tonight then sleet and rain.

yeah, i saw the forecast for the slop headed our way. i think people will expect the worst even though its relatively minor for what we could be getting right now, here in upstate NY. with so many still dangling limbs and in some cases power lines  , im half expecting to lose power again! that would be so degrading to have lost it for days and then have it go black again. as for the dechlor, good advice and thanks, but i never really measure anyway. use pond dechlor in a 6 gal so i just use a "blob" which is certainly more than enough (knock wood never had problems yet)
your offer for some media is very kind. i will be in touch about that but want to get through the next storm system first. keeping fingers crossed!
cheers to all
:)

I cant remember how many tanks you have, but Ill pitch in some media too if you need it...I can only offer freshwater since my brackish and marine are having some issues right now...but what's mine is yours ^_^

that goes to anyone in the area who has been affected by the storm (keeping fingers crossed that NJ doesnt get hit as soon as I halve my media)

thanks again for the media offer. lets see about this new system moving in and then ill be in touch.

Normally i would pitch a joke about NE states and how they cannot deal with cold weather.....

This topic is very humbling.

I've been bitching about eh..... 0 to -10 degree whether here.......... and was required to go to school in -48f in steamboat (and have done it on multiple occasions)...... Most (mountain resident) Coloradans "get along fine" in this sort of weather.... but this sort of crisis is not expected in N/E America.

Considering the crippling economy, I can only hope that families are doing alright. If I can offer any help loraxchick, plz let me know.

Hey remZ,
its totally accurate to say the LEAST that this last storm was indeed humbling. we are very used to huge storms that regularly dump up to 2 feet, or more, of snow at one go (a typical nor'easter), not to mention "lake effect" snow from the great lakes. but this one was different. all that ice!!! the trees just couldnt handle the weight and it looked like a bomb went off around here. The night of the storm you could hear the crackling of the trees as they were breaking. huge limbs/tree tops/ giant 50 ft trees just uprooted, and many of this debris all over the power lines. it is increadibly widespread and very unusual weather indeed. most "ice events" typically only deliver around 1/8 inch (and this is considered significant icing), but this storm delivered up to 3/4 inch!!! my apt. has a built in natural gas heater (which is why i was able to stay home and not relocate to somewhere warmer), and why i was able to keep my tank temps at a somewhat reasonable level. this is the worst winter storm(as far as damage and power outtages go) in 20 years (i remember the last one as i was 7.....huge snowstorm in october ad the trees with all their leaves on couldnt handle the weight and we had a similar situation)...
im just greatful to have been relatively comfortable 9if not bored) and to have saved my fish... i know lots around here would love to have said the same. i particularly feel for the poor cashier where i bought my coffee during the outtage who lost over 40 tropicals. how sad!!! my sister in law up to road from me also lost all her fish. all i really lost was a bunch of food in the fridge/freezer that spoiled... it really is crazy how serious the situation was for thousands of folks in the area-some STILL dont have power after nearly a week.
but enough of my rambling...
thanks to all those kind folks offering media and just general thoughts of well-being for us here!!!
hope all's well in YOUR neck of the woods everyone!
CHEERS

Hi guys
just an update on my filter dilemma from the four days with no power. its been three weeks now since the lights came back on and i just want to let those folks who were very kind in their offering of media, that my filter seems to have sorted itself out. actually when i tested two days after the electricity came back on, all stats back to normal and has been so since. so i guess all's well in bacteria world. maybe a small die off due to no circulation, but im glad i didnt recently clean my filter as i feel there was enough gunk in the actual canister to keep it going until circulation was restored. but i wanted to offer a BIG THANKS to those of you who offered the media. now if i can just get the planted tank's algae to settle down....ill be a happy girl!
all the best for the upcoming new year!
CHEERS AND SALUTATIONS!!!!!
