For 2 weeks now, I have been cycling a brand new 29g tank. Yesterday I came into my room and I saw my thermometer floating..I took it out and noticed a small hole in the bottom and than saw a few drops of water inside the thermometer. Do I have to completely flush my tank now and start over? The thermometer does not contain mercury to my knowledge as it said it contains alcohol, paraffin wax, steel shot and lead paper, glass tube and non toxic coloring.. This might explain my 2 gupies dying.

I broke a glass thermometer and all the steel bearing are still sitting under my gravel. I had called the company and asked what the metal was, and they said it was steel and wouldn't harm anything.

If your worried but don't want to start over, give the company a call in the morning and see what they say.

i guess ull never get a quick anser in the emergency area, but yes, u should remove the fish to another ank an change 50% of the watter every other day for about 1.5 weeks then recylce it, or flush it comepletely and buy pre set water at a local fish store, this water is already set at all the right levels to just add fish in

The steel shot can be retrieved with a magnet. The rest, except for the alcohol, can be scooped out by hand. A quick 50% water change will dilute the small amount of alcohol to a a level that shouldn't pose a problem. Glass is tough to get out, I would leave the small amount. This would be if you completely destroyed a thermometer in the tank. A few drops of water in the thermometer won't cause a problem.

There are very few reasons to have to buy water from your lfs. You would have to have horrible tap water, or need ro water to start with for some specific sensitive freshwater fish, or a saltwater aquarium. The only water you should be using is properly treated tap water. Any fish that you will be putting in a newly cycled tank should be fine with that.

Thanks for all the quick replys. I ended up cleaning out the whole tank and starting again just to be on the safe side..I would rather wait a few more days than have my fish die and have to do the process I just did. Thankfully there was only 1 piece of glass that broke off and my filter was able to catch that since thats where I put my thermometer. :good:
