Hello,

I've got a male betta in a tank with one dalmation molly, one borneo sucker, two cardinal tetras, two endler guppies and two platinum tetras. I have just noticed that there are two holes in the back fin of my betta. I've had the betta for about three weeks and I haven't noticed these holes before (I'm sure I would have noticed the holes previously if they were there when I bought him, but I guess I can't be sure). Has anyone had any problems mixing bettas with these fish? Or could something else be causing it?

I am open to any advice you can give me,

Thanks

Well firstly tetras are nippy little things and may go after your bettas tail. But if the holes are in the center of the fin then chances are he blew out his tail by over flaring Meaning if he's been over flaring and stressing the tail it'll cause holes and rips in the tail.

male betta realy should have a tank on their own. how powerful is your filtration, it sounds like he has been caught in a powerful current rather than being nipped. their finns are realy fragile so currents can rip them or put holes in them. keep an eye on him and make sure the other fish are not harrasing him. and keep an eye out for any figns of fin rot

Holes are a sign of finrot.....what sort of size are they, fin nipping doesn't normally cause holes...are the ends of your bettas fins frayed, or at all tattered or uneven.....this is what fin nipping usual causes, but fin nipping can then make finrot set in.

I must say my betta lives with tetra, danios and a pitbull plec, and my tetra are sectioned off for fin nipping my betta and I am returning them to LFS soon in return for some harlequin rasboras.
The danios are however fine.

I have an EasyCrystal Filter 250 - is this too powerful and is this what could be causing it? Thanks

my betta also likes sitting infront of my filter and getting sucked onto it, it causes him no damage whatsoever, not sure if yours is stronger than mine though, and there;s no way my bettas fins can get damaged even if sucked in the gaps as it's a sponge filter.

Ahh right thanks, the first hole is about the size a nib on an average biro, the second hole is about the size of the back of a staple (you might have guessed im sitting in an office and these are the only comparisons i can think of right now!!)

my betta recently has been getting these, but I already havea case of finrot going about, so it sounds like that's the most likely culprit.

I suggest buying some melafix (this helps heal holes and damage, it doesn't cure it)....and either mix that with pimafix (I have found this to help)....or better still some myxazin by Waterlife.

If you are from the states buy maracyn one and two :) you can use melafix alongside any meds to help heal, also adding some aquarium salt can help healing too

Oh right, I live in the UK but I will nip (pun intended) down to Pets At Home and see what they have for him!

Thanks :good:

Hmmm, now my dalmation molly is missing part of her fin, it would seem I have a devil-tetra in my tank!
