How would you stock a fishtank?
The fish tank is fifty five gallons.

My options:

1)1 oscar - to plain for just one fish unless there other fish I can add? i like them but i think its too harsh for just one fish to blah

2) a few angles- typical community a little too plain I would like a nice sized fish beacuse this a large tank

any other ideas?

i would like an active, mixed size, colorful tank

What would u do?

I can help you eliminate number one. The larger the fish you choose, the smaller the tank becomes. For an adult Oscar it's actually pretty cramped. Better to go with smaller fish, that way you give them a bigger environment. Plus a single fish gets boring quickly anyway.

A community of angels might seem boring because of it's popularity, but angels and tankmates in a planted tank is still in one of the nicest freshwater setups.

There's your answer right there. That rules out an Oscar. It also kinda rules out Angels - they're nice fish, but I wouldn't exactly call them "colorful"... mostly black and white.

I think you would do well to consider cichlids. As long as you stay away from the super-aggressive ones (ie Dempseys or Green Terrors), you can have a tank full of cichlids living peacefully. They are gorgeous, colorful, and active - sounds like a perfect fit to your desires.

I'm actually about to buy a 55 gal and set up as a community. You should look into Severums, they're Cichilds that get about 8 inches. As long as you get only one in a 55 it won't be too aggressive, and you can get a school of barbs, or tetras to go with, then maybe some BN plecs, and a school of cories. Thats what I'm thinking about at least.

then
would this be possible

1 severum
2 firemouths
2 keyholes
5 barbs
a plec

i quote "" Severums are great! I have 3 in a 55 with 5 parrots and they have a blast. The minute anyone enters the room, all three severums will line up and greet them by swimming to the front of the tank. It's a great fish to have! :) ""

How about a few red line torpedo barbs (one in my avatar)? They are absolutely stunning fish.

they are and I like them but by me they are $65 for 1

i also quote ""We have had a mating pair of three inch blue acaras in a 75 gallon tank mixed in a community of two full grown green severum, a large pleco, and multiple species of gouramis ""

uder the firemouth topic ""I've kept a few of these fish with my 2 severums and they get along fine. ""

The first thing I'd do when people claim success with their mixed cichlids is make sure those people have reached a point in their aquariums where the fish are adults, as their territorial nature really comes out as they get bigger and many don't realize this. If you do want to try a mix then keep Keyholes out of it, they're a very mild cichlid and should have a calmer environment.

6 fish that grow from 8-12" in a 75 gallon tank. This person will have problems.

barbs in a tank of cichlids i dont think would work. Specially once the cichlids begin growing to good sizes.
