its on its way, so what about the fish and the temp in the tank, this is the first summer that i have had fish-well tropical anyway, as most of my tanks are maintained at 80, should it stay like that?? or should i cool it a bit gradually...............this may seem like a silly question, but i was walking back from school just now and thought " i wonder..........."

thanks in advance for your replies :)

You'll only need to cool it if it gets excessively high. Generally speaking you'll be okay as in an English summer depending on where you keep your tank. As long as its not in direct sunlight or a hot room like a conservatory, you should be fine. Just keep an eye and if you need to, then look to cool it. If you do need to, the two methods I like the sound of (I've never had to use them) are freezing some dechlorinated water into ice cubes and drop one or two of those into your tank depending on the size. Alternatively, a fan positioned to blow along the water surface is meant to be quite effective.

:good:

hi if you just keep an on on your thermometer if the weather get really hot then yes you probably would have to turn it down to maintain the temperature your at now

Turn what down exactly?

Your heater works on a thermostat and only turns itself on when the water drops below the temperature you set it to. Turning it down when the water is too warm for it to even be on will achieve nothing.

im assuming that he/she meant the heater, but that would take a while to drop i think, i would favour the ice cube idea,.......if it got too hot, thats a big if

But thats my point. If its too hot, your heater wont be on anyway. It contains a thermostat and only turns on when its too cold. If its too hot, it sits in you water happily doing nothing. If you set it to 80, it'll come on when the water is below 80 and turn itself off when it gets there. If the external factors mean the water is at 90, it'll never turn on. So you could have it set to 60, 50, 40, whatever you want, it still wont turn on and the external factors will still keep your water at 90.

Geddit?!?!?
