Last Friday morning I gave the community tank occupants their food as normal, putting the lights on and turning the filter off, adding a bit of flake, a bit of courgette, a bit of vegetable pellets and also a cube of frozen food. Then I went to work, as normal.

When I got back nearly 12 hours later I picked up my mail, got a drink and went into the dining room to look at my fish again. I dropped everything I was carrying.

The water was cloudy, and almost all the fish were either swimming or floating at the top. Some of them like the swordtails and clown loaches were swimming vertically, with their mouths at the top gasping. One or two were lying on the leaves of plants, while a few were on the substrate. I HAD FORGOTTEN TO TURN THE FILTER BACK ON!

I quickly switched it back on the get the water moving again and bubbles circulating. I had just two days earlier got a new Eheim Ecco but hadn't fitted it yet. I threw that together and dropped the hoses in from the front of the tank and powered that up as well. Then I sat down and watched the poor traumatised fishies, cursing myself for being such an idiot.

Within 10 mins most had perked up again, though the water was still a bit cloudy. Within 30 mins all the occupants appeared to have fully recovered from their ordeal.

Over the weekend the water slowly cleared, and now (because of two lots of filtration) it's crystal clear. I have also done a 40% water change, and hoovered the substrate. However I did have to remove a dead kuhli loach this morning.... and I'm feeling really guilty that it died as a direct result of the stress it received.

I'm really only writing this because I feel sooooo guilty about what nearly happened to all my lovely friends.

And obviously, from now on I won't be switching anything off when feeding them. To hell with wasted food and having to clean the filter more regularly!

Irf.

dont worry about it i forget turn my filter back on before too, i didnt lose any fish though :(, how bigs you tank and how many fish do you have?

I agree, its not worth it to turn off the filter at anytime, unless your cleaning the filter..... Sorry to hear about your little guys suffering and I hope you don't have any long term casualities from this little ordeal

I remember coming back from the movies to find our tank water almost green and no filter activity. We'd not realised we had to change the white sponge and the filter was so full of skank it had stopped running. I felt guilty and always get worried about my fishies and the filter.

 "Hey, things are a little too quiet ... where's the usual soothing trickling sound and humming that comes from the tank? :hyper: ... everything is unplugged! "

Yeah, I did that once although fortunately it was only a few hours before I realized my filter and power head were off. Since then, I've changed the way I feed my fish in that tank not to mention unplugging things everyday was sort of a PITA.

It's good to hear things worked out Irf.

Edit: Sorry I glanced over the loss of your khuli loach.

Done it once before too

Now when I turn the filter off I leave the tank lids and cabinet doors open (external filters), and I don't close either until I've finished what I'm doing - looks like the National Grid in the front room with 3 lots of lighting coming out the open lids, lol, but is a good reminder for me.

Iwas thinking about an Off time timer, twist or button for 15 minutes...
1st post, hello

I've done it to! I have a ten gallon with a Aqua Clear fliter and when its turned off I have to add some water to get it to run again. Well I forgot to do this and about 24 hours later I relized no water was coming out of the filter I ran to the kitchen to grab a cup ran back to the tank got some water from the tank and filled it really fast. Luckly no harm was done. Hope all goes well and sorry for your lose. :rip:

why turn it off in the first place, ours only get turned off for cleaning and maintenance.

i had a friend stay over once years ago, don't have a spare room so he was sleepign downstairs on the sofa, he decided the tank was too noisy and turned the filter off without asking me, i was rather vexed with him the next morning when i found out, thankfully everything was ok

I only turn my filters and heaters etc off if Im doing maintenance...it's far to risky to turn off the filter...gone for more than 12 hours on a hot day with a external filter and your filters bacteria is most likely dead...

ive dropped lights in the tank before!! not very clever but luckily neither me or fish got a shock.

Thanks to all for comments, sympathy, etc.

To be honest I've only recently started doing this, having spotted others saying they did the same. I think the reason was so that the food didn't get blown all over the place and didn't end up getting sucked into the filter. Obviously I'll never be doing that again!!!

One more fish loss to report - probably as a result of the stress again but I can't be certain..... one of my male dwarf gouramis got a bloated belly yesterday and was swimming sluggishly and hiding out of the way. This morning it was dead.

Hopefully that's the last fatality....

Thanks again,

Irf.

Dwarfs do that from time to time tho anyway...
I wouldnt blame that one on ya mate :)
Thanks for sharing
Greg

I realised this morning that i had left the heater unplugged since doing a water change on saturday or sunday.. Luckily for me, the missus likes the house toasty 24 hrs a day, so the temperature had only dropped by 1-2 degrees... and thats it. Seems like i could never have a cold water tank unless i get rid of the missus... Thinking about it, if she left i would have more room for tanks..

Just kidding (she might read this one day)
