The Results Are In. !

Its quite alright justjon
I prob should have said that i had normal test kits. I was just very excited that my API master kit had arrived.

Ok then i do apologize completely.
The reason for me choosing to do a fish in cycle was because the tank was heavily planted after scaping and was advised by a few people(not the local lfs) to add a few little fish to give the plants some food (if you no what i mean) And the fact of my filter was packed with mature filter media from another tank i did not think it would be a problem. I did not add any other fish for 2-3 weeks after this. I again apologize .

I can completely understand your frustration at what you thought was a dig at you, but I'm not on this forum for that reason, I assure you.

Mature filter media is a great place to start as you stated and I see now why you chose to add a few fish, thats understandable.

No apologies necessary, I myself didnt seem to come across as a know it all, because I certainly dont know it all, far from it tbh.

Good choice on the planted tank though, can be a challenge to keep sometimes, but looks awesome when its right ;)

Hope your cycle sorts itself out soon enough.

I am by now means an expert but I am by no means a rucky and would never hurt fish the tank was left to run for 2 days b4 adding the 1st few little fish.

Alex, lets get one thing straight. From your post (not the section I have quoted) I have guessed that you are completely new to fish keeping. You set your tank up to be cycled. What gets me is you said you had read up a lot on this forum about fish keeping, yet you waiting just 2 days with the tank running to add some fish... You will not have read anywhere on this forum that, that is the correct thing to do.

Therefore you ARE a 'Rucky' (Although i'd spell it as 'Rookie'....)

Also, if you did as you said and read up a lot on here about fish keeping, then you would also know that the readings you were looking for with regards to Nitrite, Nitrate and Ammonia when a tank is fully cycled are the following:

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 40-ish

So in reply to your second post, what else did you expect to return to when you logged back on here to see the replies to your original post?! Everyone here will try and help you with their expertise, the guys and gals here are great!

Before you ask, yes, I'm a 'Rookie' as well but I did read up a hell of a lot after I realised my first mistakes in fish keeping.

I suggest you do some more research on here before telling everyone how great you are at this hobbie.

P.s. A cycle doesnt last 4 weeks, it lasts however long until you get the right results.

After reading the other link, you have quite a few fish in there for a fish in cycle,so keeping up with large w/c's is the best way to go and keeping the ammonia & nitrite has close to zero has possible, with the aim of them both being zero for healthy fish.

I have heard that a heavily planted tank can help with the cycling process, but even with the mature media that has been put in,the filter still needs to cycle/catch up to handle the bio load of the fish etc,so keep doing daily testing & w/c's depending on the results.

And i agree with the other peeps about the musk turtle you have, for one they need a platform and a uv light for their shells, and is not really suitable for your set up,when it reaches its adult size, don't be surprised if some of your fish go missing has they are omnivorous, and are total stinkpots! making your tank smell quite badly...

Good luck with your cycle and let us know how it goes :good:

Thanks for the info but i really wouldnt say i am in a cycle any more as it has been up and running now for cumming up 2 6 weeks now and my ammonia levels have never risen high then 0.25ppm and the nitrite levels have bin the same.
He seams happy enough for now and he can get out and sit on the bog wood under the UV lights but as he does get bigger he will defonalty be having a spieces only tank.
Turbo says hi and that he does not smell :)

In a fully cycled tank with a filter that has enough good bacteria to break down the waste, ammonia or nitrite should not be apparent at all as they are both extremely detrimental to your fish even in very small amounts, nitrates are a slightly different story, no higher than 40ppm ideally. So like you are doing so already, i'd keep up with the water changes and keep a very close eye on your stats as these toxins can still cause damage even if everything 'looks' fine.

Do you mean that your ammonia and nitrite are still above zero at this point in time, or have been and are now stable?
Cos if they are above zero, I would beg to differ when you say that your tank isnt in its cycle period.

I agree with lolly, you can't say for certain that your tank is cycled until you have readings of zero for ammonia & nitrite on a regular basis without having to do more than your weekly waterchange.
