There are several on ebay for ten bucks and under which is a steal if condition is fair or better. I saw a 13th and a couple of 19th eds. You haven't had the Innes experience until you get the real deal in your hands with its heavy paper stock, luxurious binding, impeccable printing, and glorious color plates reproduced on top-of-the-line paper.. The later incarnations by Metaframe and, worse, by he-who-shall-not-be named, pale by comparison.

Take it from a guy who once worked in printing . The real Innes editions are beautiful books and fully representative of the printers art . The paper is something that is rare for most printed books . The printing itself is perfect but the best thing is Dr. Innes’ writing style . It is an absolute delight and pleasure to read . Every aquarist should have one if only for the historical significance it has to the hobby but having been a printer I appreciate the craftsmanship of the book too .

This is a problem for me. I would need to buy two books. One to sit on the shelf and look pretty. The other one I would read and refer to so much it would get worn out.

I have a TFH version in my fishroom for the reason you mention but I usually go to the living room and pull out the real McCoy .

I have a 19th edition with the spine missing. I had taken it out of the box I inherited, but not examined it. It's not published by TFH or Metaframe.
I found several French language translations online, which is fun to ponder. The ones that look very nice as earlier English editions with the dignified cover are all from the US right now, and with the political battles going on between our countries, the border's out. I'm going to take a regular look at Canadian second hand sellers, and see if it turns up.

I respect the craftsmanship angle. I'm not a book collector, and my 3.5 years of supporting myself as a printer were on a cheap and dirty offset machine as they were becoming obsolete. No quality there. But I like older books, and I like reading off paper. Innes is my family bible, and a quality copy of that good book is a thing to have.

I have an excellent copy of Paul Loiselle's Cichlid Aquarium, but my copies of Linke and Staeck, and Anton Lamboj's West and Central African cichlid books have been half worn out.

Fish and aquarium books are another branch of our hobby . I try to pick them up when I find them but I have never seen Paul Loiselle’s cichlid book . Expert and supremely knowledgeable aquarist that he was my negligence should be classified as a minor crime .

Paul Loiselle was a really nice guy - really kind. He used to come up to Quebec to speak at our clubs, because his family had emigrated from there to the US, but had spoken French at home. He liked getting a chance to practice the language, and he liked helping out clubs. I got to know him when we spoke at the same conference, and I always enjoyed meeting him afterwards.

He did a huge amount for the Cichlid hobby. That book really opened doors.

I’ve read stories about him that repeat what you say . Our old friend Byron once posted that he met him many times and said what you say too .

19th revised. Problem is I believe the subsequent usurpers use the same edition number. But the binding tells the tale. Only Innes publishing used the green leatherette binding with 24k gold stamped image of a trio of Harlequins on the cover.

Correction: There was one 19th revised published by another firm that I believe had the blessing of Innes publishing and it is indistinguishable from the Innes 19th revised in every way. I found one at the Strand bookstore but opted not to buy it since I had 14 editions of the genuine article.
