im off to uni in september so i cant take my fish with me so i have to sell them all. however i am keeping the tank and will hopefully use it when i can.
i will hopefully return to fish keeping in 3-4 years but i am already planning my next set up.
Hi all, new to this section!

my tank is a 4x2x2 450L (120 USG) which is currently a planted set up. recently i have wanted to keep cichlids as i have conquered the planted side and i think im very well prepared to do it.

my tank is already well filtered with 2 ex1200's as us plant nuts have to be on top of our water quality. will this be okay for cichlids? (if not i had already planned to swap a 1200 for an fx5, so that should be plenty)
i have koralia's for added flow which i can probably use as well as luminaires for decent lighting etc.

i would love to keep some mbuna or malawi species. i have had ideas of a large stack of slate or ocean rock to provide caves and passages for them to occupy, obviously blocking off sight lines etc to control dominance.

i love the look of aaronnorths old tank

and would hope to achieve something similar

can you guys recommend some species for a newbie to consider keeping??

i have four years to do my research but i want to find out a little before i head off to uni so i can see what those shops have to offer!

i want a good mix of colour but not to much aggression as i am new.
i would like to keep mbuna's or similar (what can you advise)

i like the look of electric yellow labs and P. demasoni

what else can you advise me keeping, or perhaps travelling down a slightly different route like the ones aaron chose to keep.

obviously i do my research first but you guys are the ones with the experiance.

cheers for all your help.
i hope my tank is big enough!

Nick, its all well and good going to uni BUT surely you can have a nano tank :) a tank small enough for a mini scape ect with 5 galaxy rasbora or even just a few shrimp. It can be done, its small and the appliances take up pennys on the bill. :) Worth concideration for sure.

i have asked the people at uni and they said no pets are permitted at all.

but fish dont make a mess, noise or smell so its silly really. i might try and take my 40L nano down and wing it. if they say i cant have it, i will have to give all the livestock to the LFS.

after all i have a small tank with rasboras, englers, shrimps, snails, khuli's etc!

A small tank that size would be cool with a couple of shellies in it :good:
:fish:

what about some Neolamprologus multifasciatus in the 40L?

if so how many?

A pair or a trio would be awesome, I had 6 adults in a 46ltr , no probs, some sand, a piece of ocean rock, small java fern and lots of shells, all good :good:

sounds good, but it will be silly me selling my little rasboras and stuff off just to pay for some more fish to fill it. i dont really want to let me rasies go at the price im selling them for but they have to go!

can anyone advise me on the first post i made in this thread? we seem to have detoured a little!

"Meanwhile back at the ranch"
Yeah I'd stick with the galaxies etc, lovely, can't comment on Malawis etc..
Someone in the know should be along soon :good:
