Hi all

Not sure if somebody has already done a post like this before but i thought it would be interesting. What would be the most perfect set up, your dream set-up if you like, the cost does not matter but the tank must fit in the average house. Lets choose it.

Right to start i guess we need the tank, my ideal would be a 10ft x 2ft x 2ft

would do you think the tank size should be? we could spend the night discussing the tank, so people get a chance to post and design the fantasy set-up.

Thanks
VM

Hi ben, I hear you about the 2ft front to back i guess it could be wider, are you suggesting a 6ft lengh 6ft front to back and 3ft high (sorry can never remember the way it goes)

God knows what I'd fill it with, but my dream tank would prob be around 6ft x 3ft x 4ft (l x w x h). I would also have to make the jump from tropical to marine, and I think I'd want it as a centerpiece in a living room/dining room type area. Sort of as a wall between the two.

Only 1 problem... I'd have to grow about a foot to be able to do maintenance at the bottom! Being 5ft 3" is a physical restraint as to the size tank you can get.

I could fit in Ben's 6x6x3 but would think it would fall through the floor being an upstairs lounge. I would need to get rid of some furniture too, perhaps the pool table would need to go.

I think I would prefer to have something long. Perhaps 12'x3'x2' high, or maybe 14 foot long that would fit nicely along the wall so would be good on the joists and would run half the length of the living room under the TV, TV would need raising or moved to another wall, but thats no problem with an 18 foot high ceiling, again would need to get rid of 55g and some furniture.

A nice large sump would be nice with a central exposed display area that has some species tank only inhabitants and a seperate section for frags. Equipment could still be hidden in the sections not on view.

Oh dear, it appears I have thought too much about this again. My size probably would not be suitable for most living rooms though.

i dont like long narrow tanks because you end up with just a wall type aqua scape. So something with good front to back dimensions would be best imo

How about 10ft long to fill a wall, 3ft front to back as mentioned to avoid the wall effect and 2ft tall to make for easy maintanance.

Sounds mighty fine to me.

wow I just used the calculator to work out how much water a tank that size would hold, it's......449 usg 1699 litres and thats before the sump

VM, I could fit that nicely along one wall of my livng room, it would look stunning.

Andrew has seen some lionfish and a rabbitfish today, he is in love. Just maybe, I may be looking at a bigger tank anyway soon.

Ideal mate, lf everyone's happy we could go with that size then 10 x 3 x 2, I take it, it would have to a have a sump how big would that need to be?

I could fit a 10'x3'x3' in my living room. 673 usg. It could go along one of our walls. The floor joists run perpendicular to the wall and I believe they actually rest on the concrete foundation below (basement). That's probably feasible. I'd make it a show tank with really cool and unique fish. Not sure if it'd be a fowlr or reef as I'd want angels. I'd run the plumbing for my sump through the floor and have the actual sump in the sump in the basement to cut down on noise and make water changes easier.

Using RC's sump calculator for a 10'x3'x2 tank the minimum sump size is 37.4 gallons, which would handle the overflow from the tank with the power off etc.

Obviously, that is small, do we want a display area in the middle for some species tank only fish (eg seahorses) and a frag section, or do we go with the normal sump sections.
