The New Tank Is Getting There

I currently have : Juwel Rekord 96

5 zebra danios ( 2 females and 1 male I think)
2 male dwarf gouramis ( blue and orange-ish)
1 bristlenose catfish

I was a bit worried when the din't have a female at the LFS, but the guy siad they would be fine together, and so far they seem to enjoy each other's company.
The zebras are constantly playing round the whole tank, especially in the flow of the pump, and are always hungry so that's probably a good thing.

I don't know what to get next now, as I woulkd really like a centrepiece fish, but I don't want to overstock.
I might add some neon tetras when the tanks has matured some more.

I still need to get a few cory's and was thinking perhaps 2 female gouramis, but I realise that they would probably have to make up my centrepiece fish then?

Any suggestions are, again, most welcome.

i'd definatley suggest a group of cory's, I'd go for one of the smaller species. I think I'd then just get another shoal, something like the neon's. Then you've got the DG's as yopur centerpiece for the tank.

Smaller species of cories include habrosus, my favorites, hastatus and pygmaeus. They are all quite small at about 3 cm full grown. Any of them would be a good choice and you could get away with maybe as many as 8 in a small tank like yours. The typical breeding setup for a trio of these dwarf cories is a 5 gallon tank so they an be happy and healthy in a very small space.

And as Miss Wiggle says, some neons would also look very nice, or maybe cardinals? Look for striking fish to occupy the middle section of the tanks, as you already have fish on your top and bottom levels, some more DG maybe? if possible in even different colors that the other 2? That would look nice

Thanks everyone, I had exactly that in mind, cory's, two more DG's and 5 or 6 tetra's of some kind, probably neons or bleeding heart.
I'll leave my tank to adjust a bit though, as the fish I have in there already seem to produce a lot of waste, might even start doing two 20% water changes a week, but then again the corys will probably do some cleaning.

What about shrimp? Don't they produce minimum waste and are great cleaners?

The cories will remove uneaten food but they add to the biological load in a tank, they don't remove it. If you add cories or any other fish, you are adding to the bioload and will need to compensate for that with more water changes and / or better filtration.

I was under the impression that my current stocking level is well under what the filter should be able to handle?
I also do weekly cleaning, with every water change ( between 20 and 30% depending on the dirt that has accumulated), and my fish seem to be very happy ( all demonstarting natural behaviour).
Please don't tell me I will need a different filtration system if I were to add more fish?

By the way, I stopped at Dobbies garden world aquatics in Southport on saturday and I can see why Marine tanks are so popular. The saltwater fish are out of this world, and they make the tropicals seem so drab and boring! I want one!
