My LFS only sells goldfish and not tropicals so if I want tropicals (and I do) it will mean a good 30 minute drive. If I take stopping at traffic lights and other hold ups into account it could be as much as 45 minutes.
Probably a silly question but will any fish that I purchase be alright with a journey of that time?

PS. I've just read other posts of a similar nature so I now realise there shouldn't be anything to worry about.

yes fine, when the fish come to the store they often spend 12 hrs or so bagged up on the flight over from wherever they came from. :good:

couple of things you can do to mitigate any risks though, put the fishy bag into a dark and relatively warm place e.g. wrap it up in a jumper or put it into a handbag. The darkness will calm the fish and being enclosed will help retain any heat. :good:

unless of course its bloomin hot in your car and you have no airco, then you may want to try and find a slightly shaded spot for the fish incase they boil! but hey ho winters coming so i doubt that will be a problem!

ha ha of course, temp's more a worry for cooling down than overheating at the moment!!

i use a cool box to pop fish bags in, its insulated so the water shouldn't heat up/cool down too much and with the lid on its nice and dark so it shouldn't stress the fish out too much.

A bucket or cool box with a lid as suggested - it can be useful to get some newspaper and scrunch it up and pack it around the bag so it doesn't roll around in the box or bucket. Put the lid on to keep it dark and reduce the stress to the fish. Suggestion: if you've got children in the car, advise them that it's not helpful to keep opening the lid 'to check the fish are alright'! When you get home, don't take the lid off all in one go, keep the lights off and let it get lighter for them gradually.
