I have to confess since I have had my fish tank up and running I've only ever used flake food  but as I was thinking about what dog meat to get I suddenly thought about fish and have gotten frozen bloodworm for them which they thouroughly lurve but that got me thinking and I've read alot about giving fish veggies ie cucumber, lettuce, peas etc & was wondering although it must seem like a daft question how do you feed them the veg? do I just plonk it in the water as it is? or do I boil it to soften it or what??? :dunno:

Not all fish are going to eat the veggies, especially not right off the bat. Bet yes, just put it in the tank. There is a product called a screwcumber that helps to hold the vegetables down and is safe for the fish. Also, you can make your own fish food, from a variety of fish and veggies blended together, then freeze it and cut off squares. Hope that helps a bit.

Isn't that abit cannibalistic to be blending veg and fishes to feed to fishes? lol

I thought I was meant to boil the veg somehow, if so how long for? If I chop it up straight out the fridge and put it in the tank what about like pesticides etc & washing it under the tap as you're not supposed to put tap water in the tank without it being dechlorinated? What kind of veg do I use that's suitable? I heard about peas but my peas are frozen...and somebody said something on here about shelling them? Sorry I'm just a little confuzzled! :)

It is best to give them slightly cooked to cooked vegies. You can use water from the tank in a bowl and microwave them if you want to make sure to not introduce chemicals from other water. When I make my guys peas I use frozen, them put some in a small bowl, microwave for about ten seconds depending on quanitity. After this it is easy to pinch the hulls off with a thumb and finger, discarding the hulls. Some people just mash it up with their fingers, I use a tiny paring knife and against the side of the bowl just chop, chop, chop. Then I can use the knife tip (I don't have any fish that try to eat while I'm dispensing) to put the peas in the water. A similar method can be used for other vegies, many only need to be nuked enough to soften them and others, like slices of cucumber, are eaten best when weighted so they sink.
