I've heard of people hear in calgary habveing entire tanks wiped out after buying just three fish there

There's a Petland a couple of hours from where I live that is absolutely fantastic. I've never seen a single dead fish in their tanks... and one time I saw a tank that had "ICH!!!" written on it in huge bold letters, with no prices for the fish in it and the water was obviously tinted with meds... they take care of their fishies :D
They're so good, in fact, that the next time I set up a tank from scratch I'm planning to drive all the way down there to buy from them... they always seem to have a real nice selection :)

I think you have to observe and use judgment. I have two Petlands near me...one near home and one near my business. The one near my house is run by young kids. There are always several tanks with 'not for sale' on it and dead fish floating in the tanks. The Petland near my biz is run by a guy who, in my opinion, is serious animal person and gives me the impression that he is knowledgable. The tanks always look pristine. Bottom line.....I think...wherever you buy your fish....a quarantine tank is the way to go. Speaking of Petland, you can buy a complete quarantine tank setup for under $20 for the budget conscious. Good luck. SH

Yep, I have never seen a Petland that had healthy animals. Pitiful places if you ask me :/
actually, there was a new one built about a year ago, and i am surprised how well they keep there fish tanks, always clean, no dead fish. I bought a couple fish from there and they are still lasting. but on the other hand i'v been to some where it was sick to look at the fish like Walmart  It all depends on who is in charge and if they care!

I absolutely love my Petland, it's my LFS and it's amazing. I may be working there.
Occasionally there are some dead fish in the tanks, but on a busy weekend it's hard to keep up with customers and such when they're understaffed.
They've got such an awesome selection, and I get such amazing deals, too. I love being friends with the staff.
My Petland's awesome. And that's that.
