The Deep, In Hull

means nothing to me, Ian does the geography in our house! lol

is the Blue Planet better then?

Can't say tbh because I have never been to the Deep.

All I can say is the last time I went to the Blue Planet I thought it was quality. I wasn't actually into keeping fish when I went but looking back I can recall the set up was great with different biotopes etc and a great selection of fish to view. There is also an underwater tunnel that takes you right through the Shark and Ray section.

Very impressive  .

Here is a link to the website (which is a bit poor tbh)...

The Blue Planet

Actually J10 off the m53, not J11 or 12. My bad.

cool, looks good, might take a trip there instead then :D

I've gone to the Blue Planet in Ellesmere Port 3 times in the last 2 years. Visited about 4 or 5 different public aquariums as well, and this one is definatly my favourite. It won't be a full day out (to be honest, I don't think any of the aquariums are), but you should be able to spend a good 3 hours there.

While all their smaller tanks are lovely to look at, the shark/ray tunnel is definatly the best.
*goes to look into The Deep*

wouldn't expect anything like that to be a full day, just a few hrs and then go somewhere for a bit of lunch then home, that sort of thing

even better  .......

....less than half a mile away from the Blue Planet is a complex called The Colliseum with...Frankie & Bennys, Chicitos (sp?), Chinese, Pizza Hut, Burger King.....take your pick.

Hi Miss Wiggle,

I've done both "The Deep" and "Blue Planet" and they are both worth visiting

The Deep has the glass elevator running down the tank, so you get to view many levels on the way down and I think it's the deepest veiwing tunnel in Europe  and I think it was a bit cheaper.

But I prefer Blue Planet as I've been diving in there :hyper: (you can have a go ;) ) and it has one of the longest underwater tunnels in the world.

Both are easy to find too  though if I was heading out for the day, I'd do Blue Planet cos you have Cheshire Oaks (massive shopping centre) nearby and a food outlet as Keane said.

you can go diving ?? do you need to be properly qualified and stuff or can you just snorkel?

i SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO want to learn to dive, just a bit expensive aint it? :/

Yep, you can go diving  even numpties can do it, but it's VERY expensive then (rather than just plain old expensive if you are qualified)

It's £175 for newbies or £100 for divers (I think I paid about £70 when i did it). Full details are HERE I heartily recommend it (on an empty stomach though  )

Diving is not that expensive  The full PADI open water course is around £250 to £300. You can then do more qualifications if you like and spend hundreds and hundreds on courses and equipment if you want  Or just hire the stuff when you are on holiday for a few quid ;)

*suddenly wishes she was up noorf*

last time i went to london aquarium a few weeks ago it was manky. the tanks were really messy. sick fish. missing seahorses.

then i went to the aquarium in Bristol Zoo and it was much nicer, smaller yes, but much nicer. they had a breeding program for goodeids which i've never seen before.

and if anyone fancies a sunny trip abroad, the Oceanarium in Lisbon Portugal is awesome!

The one in Portsmouth has a breeding programme for ameca splendens, and they have a rather neat brackish tank with anableps, who are also breeding (fry tanks near the exit).

And if you are the sort of person that needs to be warned off keeping the larger catfish, I'd suggest a visit either to Bournemouth or Marwell zoo (only a small fish section in the latter, but the zoo itself is good).
