I have a 10 gallon hexagonal tank which I got to house my last fire bellied toad 3 years ago. Since said toad has passed on ( :-( ) I've struggled to work out what to put in the tank. For the last few months I've been using it to keep 3 rescued serpae tetras alive but now I'm looking to either rehome them or risk putting them in one of my communities.

So...

Any ideas what can live in such a tall and weirdly shape tank? I feel guilty putting anything in something with such a small surface area - even guppies or tetras but I can't trade up as it's all a bit DIY :/

HELP.

You could plant it up real nice and do some celestial pearl danios or other small fish. I understand your curse, I had a 25g hex and that thing was a pain to stock and even harder to scape.

I know a lot of people disagree but I personally think it's dumb when folks say you can't keep a betta in a tall tank. They can swim afterall lol it's not like it's going to drown because it miscalculated the distance to the surface :p

So yes, that's my vote, get yerself another betta! You could add in a couple of snails of some sort and maybe some shrimp too. Could some otos go on there? I dunno what their minimum tank size is but I would think you could put some otos in too.

Thanks you two...feeling more inspired now :good:

I just changed the substrate from old icky gravel to three layers - JBL soil, JBL manado gravel and a topping of sand so planting is a definite possibility. I do struggle with lighting for this tank because of it's depth so I'll have to look into that.

I have some ideas for a scape. Luckily I bought a really tall and twisting log for my toads so I'll scrub that up and see how it looks.

Bettas are great ... I did just set up my 5 gallon for a gorgeous crowntail I've been eyeing up for weeks but I suppose I could always have three. Thinking about it, there is a beautiful blue butterfly with cellophane fin fringes at my LFS.

Hopefully my assassin snails will breed again and I'll get some babies to pop in too.

This was my hex, if it gives you any ideas on wood that is good for a taller tank. It's bnot much, but this was my first planted tank.

I think this Tank looks good, I like the way you have done the wood, planting etc,a backing would be good and move the thermometer round the corner, should the heater be at an angle? (only what I've read on here)

Moss on the wood and it would be a perfect shrimp tank, how about that?

I had a 25 litre hex and it's now an empty tank in a cupboard as it drove me mad too! It was my first ever tank and used to house guppies and platies. It then went on to being a fry tank for a while but I got so sick of the optical illusions when trying to catch the fry to take to the lfs that I gave up and bought a 30 litre 'normal' shaped tank instead

I did put my apple snail in there when my main Juwel tank was having white spot meds in and he seemed to hate it. He kept trying to go around the odd corners, lost his grip and fell and had to start climbing the glass again - it felt pretty cruel to watch so I'd not suggest getting anything like that :)

That's a really nice tank. The wood I've got is pretty similar and I'm hoping to get some moss on it.

At this point, I'm kind of swinging towards another betta

If you talk to Minnnt and This Old Spouse, they both have a knack for scaping. They played a big part in this tank looking this way.

Cheers. I'll probably start a journal in the planted section and try and get some attention
