The Chilly Dippers Fishless Cycle Log

Oh I meant fake plants . I'm too lazy and cheap to buy real ones ;).

Real plants don't have to be a lot of trouble. There are plenty of "beginner" plants for folks to start with. I am by no means an expert and I haven't had a bit of problems with my live plants. I have amazon swords (which are very commonly available, and cost about the same as a fake plant), I also have a fair amount of others, based on my sig.

Beginner and low light plants (low tech, meaning no CO2 dosing needed):

Anacharis/elodea
Amazon swords
Anubias
Java fern

There are many others and the folks over in the planted section can help to direct you to the proper plants for your tanks lighting set-up that require very little effort on the part of the aquarist. Ultimately, I just trim the plants a little every week during my regular water change. It takes all of about 2 minutes, maybe 5 on the top end. That's not much effort really. They also look great and they are better for the fish, IME. My cories actually laid eggs in the leaves of my anacharis. I'm not sure if they would do that with fake plants as readily.

Thanks for the advice. I actually thought about getting some but I figured my gravel wasn't deep enough. Its only one inch at most. I also wasn't sure if I needed CO2 dosing but with the plants you mentioned I might actually get some. Are they okay in 1 inch of gravel though?

Those questions are best directed to the planted tank experts. My substrate isn't that deep. You can always add a little more if necessary. ;)

For my money, you can beat the look of natural plants.
