these are the electrical things in my tank if this will help

Aqurium lighing starter unit 20 watts
aqua-flow 2 filter 10 watts
combi-heater and protecter 100 watts
and beauty light plus (light bulb thing) 15watts

plz help

i wouldn't dare check!! but yeah chances are your tanks contributed to it. hidden cost of fishkeeping is bloody leccy bills

I have 16 tanks running, it has increased our monthly bill by around $60, which is roughly a 50% increase. Most of my heaters are 150w, filters are 4w to 10w, with most tanks having multiple filtration, somewhere around 8 air pumps, numerous lights, etc.

1 tank with the equipment you listed wouldn't increase it by that much. Heaters are your biggest consumer of power, I keep my tanks warm, 80 to 86F.

For what it's worth, our electric bill has gone up about 50%---has nothing to do with increased use, just the cost of oil (here in Hawaii). And it keeps getting higher...

Atleast you never have to pay for heating except for the fish tank. Lol.

my electricity bill has not changed since fish keeping. I keep 3 tanks right now, a 37, 20, 10g and soon a 55g. Since keeping fish, i find i watch less TV and play less video games or other things that use up electricity.

I dont think that would be your fish tank. mine doesnt cost much to run & ive got 3 tanks. The main tank also has 110watt lighting on 10hrs per day. I have a pre-pay electric meter in the house and i put £20 a month in it.

You dont by any chance use electric heaters to heat the house up do you? I know they eat electricity!!

My 2 Juwel 180's worked out to roughly £290 per year between them - I used the electricity cost calculator from the Practical Fishkeeping site though.

I would hazard a guess that you get quarterly bills and that your latest bill included the back end of winter and the last set of price rises.

We have seen our elec' bills rise by 65% in the last 20 months, the vast majority of which is the rise in energy prices.

As an aside, get your mum to look at a comparison website (www.uswitch.com is the first one that springs to mind - there are others), where you can see if there is a cheaper provider for you.
