well true, I dont have to potty train a horse, just shovel daily

Alright, alright, geez. I vote for a sticky showing the rule so that each time a newbie posts a topic on it, a person/mod can just reply with a link to that sticky instead of having this discussion over and over again.

And really, Tolak, you have a great rule ("One inch of slim bodied fish that grow to no larger than 3 inches, per gallon of water"), but nobody has ever heard about it. Put it in a sticky.

do you not think that it would be more constructive to (for example) spend your time writing a detailing post on how to choose sensible stocking lists, what factors to take into consideration (compatibility, feeding, water parameters, decor requirements etc etc) and with references to sites where beginners can check these factors rather than just come out with a negative post slating other people's advise.

It riles me when people see a problem and instead of doing something constructive to improve the situation they come out with a negative post just wingeing about it.

Yes they have. This is what is implied when people mention inches per gallon. It may not be mentioned, because it's pretty confusing for someone new, but very rarely do you find people mentioning it when the fish aren't the normal community type.

This is the first I've heard, or taken notice of the 1" a gallon rule. As a beginner I've been working on the surface area 'guide' which considering fish need oxygen seems a better bet - especially in a tank with no added aeration.

As for the adult or bought size again this seems a little weird, sure you don't want to be keeping a monster in a small tank, but then as your fish and your interest grows so do the number and size of your tanks.

Ok, after all this great advice most of which is "Your tank's too SMALL for that!" Buy a 200 gallon tank. Add 2 guppies. Just to be safe, add them one at a time.

I am sure 2 Guppies would have a blast in a 200 gallon. Just do a male and female... soon you will have more lol.

This is an old topic that has pretty much run it's course.
