Anyone else been having bother with power cuts and the lightning strikes?

I've had no electricity for over 24 hours, just got it back on yesterday afternoon. My poor Fish have had no filters running in all that time. I was really scared I was going to loose them. Their water was all murky and they were all hovering at the top of the tank. My babies were all sitting on the bottom : (

I was watching it out of the window and saw a huge blue streak come down just a street away. I think it hit the main road but I haven't gone to look. It was so big and so close you could feel it, never mind the noise it made! There was a constant rumble in the sky and almost constant light from above the clouds. I have to say that I can't remember a time when I've seen anything quite like it before. And it went on for so long.

Now the power is back I've learnt that there's been flooding everywhere, there's been landslides and I have no idea how many hits there's been. I've just watched a video of the Tyne Bridge being hit... it was so close to everyone.

Thankfully all my Fish are fine now. The filters have cleared the water and everyone is swimming around like nothing has happened : ) The adults are recovering and even every single baby is now swimming around quite happily. I can't beleive I haven't lost anyone! I'll be changing the water for them all now that I have hot water back to do it, and I got my Prime the other day, the day it started, so I can try that out too.

Has anyone else had a hard time?

Scary scenario, mother nature is so fickle and scary sometimes..
I know I haven't read this and may be out of my mind but I have attached the same kind of battery backup systems to my tanks i use on my pc, I'm a worry wart. If I could minimize the time without filtration I'm going to do it.
I do however need to research if the system I have, would it give me any real long term protection or did I just buy 1/2 hr. As I didn't really research but rather attached an extra I had.

I would think however that given 1-2 days, with out any, as long as there was not a problem to begin with you could just do a water change, or 3, ( water flows in a blackout) and both add O2 and relive any built toxins, the bacteria should survive in good enough numbers if kept wet and with O2 to cope on reintroduction of flow, unless seriously extended.

Glad to hear it all turned out well

It did make me wonder if there was such a thing as a battery powered filter. Never come across one before, but how useful would that be! Thinking about it I'm suprized that no one has thought to sell them : /

I wish I could have done water changes but I had no way to heat the water and with it being a sub-tropical tank I was scared that if I'd opened the lid I'd have let all the heat out. The water coming out of the taps was freezing and I don't think I could have gotten it to the right temp 'cause the house was much colder than usual. I figured that it was safer to just leave them and not open the lid to keep the warm in so they weren't battling a non-filtered tank and the cold at once. Does that make sense? I'm not very good at explaining things.

Anyways, thankfully this doesn't happen often, pretty rare really I suppose, so hopfully things will be OK for a long time.
