my nan just rang telling me to go round quikly she has a little fish for my currently empty 2.5 foot tank...........

i just came home with an oscar i think
hes only 1inch but ive read they grow 1 inch a month?
is this correct?
if so how long should i give it before i pick up a bigger tank?

If it is an oscar they do grow pretty rapidly, not sure about the 1inch a month though

Will you definitely have room for a tank big enough to house it long term? There is alot of debate over min tank size for a fully grown O, but I think I've regularly seen 75gal noted as minimum. And that's likely to be around a 5-6ft tank...

If you will have room and want to upgrade as you go then I'd give it till it's around 3-4" max before upgrading to a min 4fter.

Or till it's 3-4" before upgrading to it's long term sized tank. I've never seen the growth rates first hand, but after following the threads of oscar owners on here I've definitely seen the 1" per month growth rate you've heard of.

ive got 2 tanks i can sell and can get a new one knocked up for me, thats no trouble. my nans getting quiet ill so id not want to get rid of it. plus hes kinda cute...

Yep, i agree, but Oscars loose a LOT of their colour as they mature
EG: this fish,although really well coloured at this age,:

Could mature,and lose the majority of its orange, like this:

Although it would have to go under the knife to become female
