hi there im new to this forum and looking for some advice please.i have just set up an approx 110 litre tank with a fuval plus 3 internal filter,i am looking into buying a tetratec ex 600 external filter and just wish to ask if this is a good choice or if theres any horror stories to report or if theres a better/different choice avaible? many thanks.

I wouldn't bother with an ex600, an ex700 would be better, and an ex1200 would be fantastic.

I personally like the ex filters, I have an ex700 and an ex1200 and they work brill :good:

For that size tank you are really looking at the ex700 and ex1200-as mentioned :good:

i have the ex600 and the ex1200, they are brilliant filters.

never used one but did consider one before. They seem like very good filters for the money :good:

thank you for your replys, i did look at the ex 700 but thought that might be to big, i supose to much filteration is better than not enough.i will be buying new but whilst looking around on ebay i looked at secound hand units and found that a lot of used filters advertise as having new "o" rings and vlalves!! is there problems with leaks on them ? as realy dont want to come home from work to find an empty tank and wet carpet. thanks.

iirc theres not much difference in price between the ex600 and ex700? you can never have to much filtration, just slow the flow down/divert the flow

Guys, i have a ttex1200(thats 1200lph) on my 120litre tank, i go as far to say, i want a little more.

Trouble is, what its actually rated at isnt what you get, becuase thats simply the power of the pump alone, you have to take into consideration the tubing, filter media and connections to the tank that will slow it down, the ex600 will only be running at about 400lph...

we need a tank volume to give any, meaningful advice.

Excellent point AdAndrews:good:, one often missed. unfortunately, the ex700 i measured, only managed 340lph (with clean media). its a good "rule of thumb" to devide the claim by 50%. Eheim and aqua one are, slightly different. they show flow and pump power. even so they seem to be 20-30% down on claims.

I have ex700 & ex1200 both do a great job :good: either one would be good for your tank,i would personally go for the 1200.:)

boboboy my tank is 36x15x12" which i think makes it about 106 litres if im right? are tetratec that good at over rating there filters??

well its not really overrating, they publish the pump power only. its measured, if at all, with no media or piping. but Tetra are not the only ones, as i said. so, as most are the same, they are just following industry practice.

on the subject of "overfiltering". to me, and many others, a flow rate of 5x (real) is a start point. so even with a EX1200, running at 600lph. i would consider your tank "properly filtered". thats not to say an ex600 would not be "adequate". just, not an efficient option.
