My tank is 37l with 4 neon tetras and 1 platy. It's 24c. Ph: 7.5 amm: 0 nitrates:0 nitrites: 40.

I have had some very sick tetras for a couple of months now, bent tails on one, very skinny and white ragged fins etc. I tried large water changes and they were just getting worse so I took them to the Lfs and the man told me to put methylene blue in my tank but instead of doing that I have bathed them in it in a bucket for 30 mins.

The only thing I need to know is if I would be able to keep them in a breeding trap so it doesn't stress them out too much keep catching them for doses or is it cruel to keep them in the trap?

Thank you

I hope you mean 40 nitrates and not nitrites?

I personally wouldnt keep them in a breeding trap as it can hinder filtration of the water the neons are in, and its gets pretty dirty fast. Right now your fish need good clean water to help them. Bathing them in a bucket of meds for 30 minutes isnt going to help, especially if you do not know what the ailment is. It does sound like fin rot from the tattered fins description. As all fish in the tank have been exposed for months, it is not going to harm your healthy fish to treat the tank. That way, the neons are in medication constantly. Do you have a small tank that you could move them to that is at least 7-10g? Or an extra filter you can attach to a large plastic tub?

I have 2 convicts with ich in a 75g tank with about 20 other fish. I am treating the whole tank and have not seen any ill effects on the healthy ones from being in a medicated tank. Hope this helps.

Oh try doing daily water changes as well. clean healthy water is one of the best medications of all.

I have not got a spare hospital tank unfortunatly. I've tried for months with the water changes and the water is crystal clear so I asked for advice from the fish shop and he told me to use methyline blue - i'm using a bath because it can kill bacteria in the tank and stain decor blue. I also have 2 baby platys that I don't want to risk posioning.

The breeding trap is in the flow of the filter and has lots of holes for circulation, would it still get dirty?

yes it would the holes in the trap are no where near adequate. I use methelyn blue in my tanks and have nver destroyed a filter. after the course of treatment, carbon removes access medication from the tank.

Ok cheers for the advice, saves me making a mess haha! Will the fry be ok with meth b ?
