So I usually test only the basics in my tank on a regular basis (pH, ammonia, nitrite). Having neglected to test nitrates in a while, I did it last week and found that it was off the charts (at least 140...that's as high as the tester would go). So I went to the LFS to see what I could do about it, since off the charts=BAD, and came across Tetra EasyBalance Nitraban. I went home, did a 25% water change, and then added the recommended dose. I just tested my nitrates again today, and they're ZERO. Amazing. If anybody is having trouble with nitrates (and don't have live plants!) then you should try this stuff!

Nitrate test kits can be very unreliable as well. Is it an old test kit?

Actually yeah it is...maybe 4 or 5 years old. I guess I should go get a new one and test it again to be sure haha

Edit: It's the kind where there's 2 little pills and you dissolve them in the tube. I don't know if there's liquid ones, but if there are, are they better?

Get the liquid dropper ones i believe they are better. if you do fairly regular water changes and you dont over feed then your nitrates shouldnt have gotten that high, unless of course your tap water is full of nitrate, although 50ppm is supposed to be the legal maximum here, if your from the US then i dunno what the limits are there.

No, I don't overfeed and I do regular water changes. It's probably just that the tester is old and is unreliable. Today when I tested the tap and the tank they both read 0. However, it's possible that any tests I've done are inaccurate (and I'm leaning towards the first one as being most inaccurate, since I don't know of a reason why they would be that high). I'll get a new tester and then let you know how it turned out!
