Testing Rocks?

hey guys
at my mothers place (she has a farm) she has some massive boulders i was wondering if i break them down into mini boulders is there any way of testing them to see if they are safe for my tank?

i will get some pictures at a later point but i cant until i .. i... i... go to my mothers

I think the first step would be to identify what type of rock they are then found out if it is suitable for aqaurium use.
