Hi folks, just doing some fish research whilst my tank cycles & although a few weeks ago I was set on a pair of GBR I'm now looking at other Apisto's that get along better with each-other meaning I can have maybe two pairs of different types.

I've been reading a lot about territories but what makes a territory ?? Are we talking a flower pot in the corner of the tank or a quarter of the tank ?? Also I'm planning on a group of Cories (maybe 7-9) as people know there pretty clumsy fish & I'm just wondering if they'll be given much hassle for straying into the said territory.

Thanks.

Whats the tank size?

Territories and when a fish claims a part of the tank thats theirs.
A fish will claim territory even if no decor is present.
Its best to put quite a bit of decor and caves to make mini territories for the fish, im not sure on apistos and corys but It could work, depending on tank size.
Whats you ph?

The tank isn't massive.. It's 24"x15"x28" 130 litres (Inches) the PH from the tap is 6.8, I have a large rock & three pieces of wood in the tank & will be adding plants after my cycle is complete.

I would probably only go for one pair then. But remember to keep your water soft and ph low.

Should I be stinking with my pair of Bolivian rams then ??

I'd stick with bolivians, honestly. Aside from the smaller tank size you have, german blue rams are fragile as hell, and prone to dying for really dumb or unknown reasons. It might just be because they're more readily available than discus are, but I see more problems regarding sick and dying GBR's than I do with discus themselves. Fragile touchy little things.

In regards to territories, only 1 pair will work in a tank your size. All cichlids (even the mild ones) will claim an area for their own, some will claim a pot, or a log, or a planted zone, a stack of rocks, and others will claim the entire tank.

That is one option although if you have soft water and low ph (and preferably using RO water) then you could try other kinds of rams. I personally like germans, golds, and electric blue rams better than bolivians.
I have been keeping this pair for about 6 months and they are still doing fine. :)
