But before i do.

I need to buy a syphon vac to clean/water change but is there ones better for sand?? of just a vac.

Second I read that you need to clean the sand before putting it in the tank. How is best to do this????

Sand does look good and it is healthier as food does not get below the surface and rot. It does, however, need more attention to KEEP looking good as all the poo etc is on show. When using a gravel vac just swirl it about about 1" above the sand to disturb the sediment and it will be sucked up. I catch the water in a bucket then when finished I carefully pour the water away leaving any sucked up sand in the bucket. When dry it taps out to be put back in the tank at the next water change.
To 'wash' the sand before putting in the tank just place a few handfulls in a (new) bucket and run water into it from the tap or hosepipe just fast enough so it doesn't put the sand out of the bucket. Let the water overflow (so do it outside where possible) untill water runs clear. Place that batch of sand in your aquarium and repeat with the rest.

Don't be surprised if your tank still goes cloudy when you do all this and then fill your aquarium, it will clear after a few DAYS :good:

So you mean to tilt the bucket and spray say with a hose to agitate it and then overflow the edge or something similar to wash out the dirty water?

Yes. I find it helps a bit if you swirl the sand with your hand or something. Gets more of the dirt out. Just do it til the water runs clear.

Thanks your a star. someone should sticky this info as its hard to search for

Cleaning and sand just gets all the how to vaccum it....

No need to actually spray it or it will go everywhere  If using a hose just stuff it in the sand, turn on the tap slowly at first then bring up the pressure so the sand swirls a bit. As the level rises let it spill over the rim a while. All you are doing is getting the DUST out of the sand which is lighter than the sand so it will naturally float away.....clear now :good:
