On the weekend i bought a new thermometer....its one of those LCD ones that take a battery and have a probe that goes into the tank.

Its giving me slightly higher temp readings than my old thermometer did (a standard glass thermometer that sat in the water )

I am getting readings between 29 and 30 degrees C

Is this ok for the fish in my tank or is it too warm?

Even though my heater is set to 25 Degrees C the thermometer is showing a temp of 29 degrees

Im going to have to turn the heater down to around 21 degrees to get a thermometer reading of 25ish

Could the thermometer be inaccurate??

How accurate are the battery operated LCD ones?

Do you have a second glass thermometer that you could use to compare the 3?

there was a post not to long ago by a member who tested like a dozen different ones and reported the difference. I'll start searching for that post.

ive found that different makes of thermo all give different readings,i have a 5ft tank so i have a glass 1 wiv probe in the middle of tank and 2 stick on types in each corner.....they all say the same temp at mo,there only £1-£2 each worth it though if you save cooking £200 of fish like ive got :hey:

if you have jus setup the heater then you have to leave it a while before it reaches the temp its set too.

i always faffed around with mine but then i realised it would keep coming on again till it got to the temp it sed on the dial.

i think they jus have to go off to cool down a bit before continuing to bring the temp up.

Ive had my heater in the tank since i started the tank 2 years ago.

Whats confusing me is that my new thermometer is readin neary 4 degrees higher than both the heater and my old glass thermometer

Since my new thermometer cost me more and is electronic i would have thought it should be quite accurate but now im not so sure

Has anyone here got one of this type thermometer?

Most Heaters need to be calibrated once placed into the tank. The numbers are just a general guideline IME. However I'm not saying that your heater is innacurate one of mine has numbers and it is spot on... the manual still said that it needed to be calibrated I just lucked out. Lower it a click a day until you get the temp you want if you believe the heater to be innacurate. If you think the thermo is innacurate then call the company and complain that they put your fish at risk.

why not buy another glass therometer , see if it reads the same as the old one . [ hope you don't get 3 different readings :X ]

the LED unit could be off a little :dunno: [ or the old one could have ] , and no , sorry I don't own one .

I use the old kind :)

Just a thought. Is there a chance that the packaging for the led thermo might have an accuracy range on it? Do you understand what I mean?

Some of these electronic thermometers have in and outside temps, eg tank and room. You haven’t been looking at the wrong reading have you?

My digital thermometer was £20 and is 2 deg out compared to my setting on both my heaters. Although I did drop it into the water .. .. Whoops. It was spot on before then.

Cant help you with the thermometers as I'd just be repeating what everyone is saying sorry I have got something to say about temp and fish. While most tropical's like 24-27 degrees C, some, blue rams for example actually prefer 29-30 degrees. But the temp thing goes the same as ph, as long as you avoid extreme's or to many quick changes your fish should be fine.

The temp reading on the heater really is just a rough guideline, it won't take into account exactly how much water it's heating and outside room temp. Mine shows 24degC and my water stays at a steady 26degC.

some fish like to have a warm tank around 29 degrees

Theres nuthing on the packaging stating accuracy

Im going to get another glass one and compare the three

Lowered the temp now to around 27 C
