This morning power went out for 5 hours. About two hours after the power went out, I put the filter media into the tank to keep it wet and give it a source of food, so i'm not worried about that.

What I am concerned about is the temperature. When power went out, the temperature dropped to around 68. Should I heat the tank up slowly over a few days or should i just let my heaters take care of it and bring it back up over a few hours?

Hmmm....I really do not know for sure. I searched around and couldn't find anything specific either. The articles I read were all very vague -- they just said to bring the temp back gradually.

If this happened to me, I would bring the temperature back slowly over the course of the day.

I lost power recently and the temp in the tanks only went down 3 degrees - so I just let the heater bring it back up without doing any adjustments. But if it's a 10 degree difference (68 to 78) -- I think bringing it back over the whole day would be better.

Hopefully someone else more experienced with this will come along!

Let the heaters take care of it they tends to heat it graually anyway, In future if there is a power cut fill up a drinks bottle with hot water and sit it in your tank :D

Hi tttnjfttt :)

If you have to bring it up 10 degrees, that's a big change, and you're right about needing to bring it up slowly.

I would raise it in at least 2 steps. Unless you have fish that would be seriously harmed by letting them stay at 73 degrees F., you could bring it up to that tonight and, after letting them adjust to it, raise the temperature the rest of the way tomorrow.

The reason for increasing it slowly is because a sudden increase in temperature is one of the factors that could lead to the fish coming down with a bacterial infection. Since your fish have probably been stressed from the drop in temperature, the decrease in oxygen due to the filter shutting down, and dirty filter media being dropped into the tank, it would be safest to avoid adding one more problem. :D
