I have my aquarium set up but no fish yet. It's 34l and I have a 25watt heater.

The heater is set to around 24 degrees but the thermometer (it came free with the heater and is one of the ones you stick to the outside of the tank) is reading 29 to 30 degrees.

I've turned the heater down to 22 and the water does feel quite warm. But I don't know whether to trust the heater setting, or the external thermometer, so I'm not sure what the water temperature the water is actually at

Need to get this sorted before the fish arrive!

What sort of fish are you planning on getting? Tropical temps are temps which are 24 degree's C or warmer, sub-tropical temps are between 19 and 23 degree's C warm, and coldwater temps are temps which are 18 degree's C or colder :) .

Get a digital thermometer, they are way better! :D

Those stick on one are rubbish. Currently my stickon one says 25, when the water is really almost 30.

When you are at the pet shop just pick up a digital thermometer, and maybe try some cold dechlorinated water to get the tank down fast before you add fish.

24-27 is a good temp to aim for.

I have a digital thermometer on order from ebay at the moment so hopefully that might solve the problem. Still deciding on fish at the moment, but it will basically be small peaceful tropical ones as it is a small tank purchased as a hobby for a 7 year old (although the research seems to be taking me a lot of time considering I told him he had to do it all himself  ).

Well maybe you will be interested in hearing what im getting for my peaceful 60L tank.

Or maybe you wont. Either way, im going to tell you!

3 Female Platys of different variations (All Female to avoid fry overload)
5 Neon Tetras
4 Black neon tetras
3-4 corydoras

And later on when i have lots of algae, i will pick up an oto.
