not too sure which section to put this in so opted for this one.

what is the best rate for changing the temp a fish is kept at?

is it something like 1C an hr?

Do you mean when adding fish to your aquarium or do you want to change the current temperature of your water? If you mean just changing the current water temp of your tank I would adjust the heater and gradually the temp would change, provided it was only a few degrees difference.

Yep, your heater will do this automatically basically as it takes quite a while to heat up water so doubtful will raise temp too quickly anyway.

Unless its a very small tank (<25litres) then be wary of turning up temp too quickly, one or two degrees at a time over several hours will suffice.

sorry guys. been out trying to mend a fence all day.

i was trying to find out what rate "gradually" and "over several hrs" was a wee bit more specifically i.e. 1 degree an hr. but it's ok, my lfs trained it to the new temp for me.
might be handy to have a note somewhere though just incase anybody else is trying to find out. if anybody can narrow it down a wee bit i would still be interested as i may have to temp train other fish at a later date :)

Well as long as the temperature you are aiming for is suitable for the fish then I would assume that 1 degree an hour would be suitable as long as the temperature change is not more that say 5 degrees. If its a big change then I would probably go for 1 degree every 2-3 hours. Although I can't see when I would need to do this? And don't take my word for it thats just what I would do I am by no means sure! :)

yeah, that sound pretty reasonable to me but just wanted to double check, see what everybody else thought.

some fish can be kept tropical or temperate i.e. zebra danio, peppered cories, paradise fish.
lfs tend to keep most of them tropical but i wanted to keep them temperate, which means lowering them from 25C to 18C.
the one i was concerned about when i posted this thread was a paradise fish which i intend to keep at 18C but can go as low as 16C so well within it's temp range :)

Ahh yea I never really gave that a thought, makes sense now! Your LFS sounds really helpful for doing that, did they charge you?

yeah, they are quite good wi things like that and great for getting in specific fish you want :D
they didn't charge for it.
i think they actually swapped all their paradise fish down to 18C, they've had them in for a while which is unusual for them as stock usually flies out the door as soon as they get it in, maybe there will be more intrest in them at the lower temp.

I work on one degree per hour, maximum of 5 degrees a day. Hope this helps :)
