So I recently bought a new heater for around $35 on sale from like $70.
For some reason it wont let me set it lower than 80.
I know rummynose like warmer water, and my otocinclus also are very active and dont seem stressed in this temperature.

My question is, will otocinclus be fine in this long term? Also I am planning on getting corydoras and hatchet fish as well and one more shoal of small tetras. Not sure which type yet. Will they all be able go live in this temp long term?
@Byron

What is the heater make? I'll look it up tomorrow, I don't understand these heaters being unchangeable, especially at that price.

Present fish in the tank will be OK, temporarily certainly, until we get this sorted out. Cories would have difficulty, though again temporary can work, but no cory species should be at or above 80F permanently. Tetras depend upon the species.

Corydora wont like 80 at all. Most tetras like under 80 as well cardinals and rummys are the exceptions that i know of.
Too warm water will shorten fishs lives as it increases their metabolism and they consume more oxygen and create more waste. Also warmer temps decrease available. Dissolved oxygen in the water.

I'll find the make. It was supposed to be changeable but at the lowest setting which is supposed to be 68 its 80

How big is the tank and whats the wattage of the heater.
If the wattage is too high for the amount of water sometimes the heater has a tough time regulating the temp

55g 200 watt

It's a viaqua 200 way heater. The price went waaaaay down on Amazon since I bought it. Maybe it was a different one that was down from $70. Although it was $30

Ah, that sounds like my Eheim Jager, only worse. To have the water at 77F, I set it at 70 or 72F. Been like this for a few years from start. I would return it if it didn't go below 80F though.

While typing, you and utahfish posted. I would return the heater, Amazon are pretty good. Tell them it does not work properly, that is certain.

Going forward, for this sized tank I would want two heaters, one at each end, and I would not go below a 250w, and more likely 300w.

Too bad you are not closer, I have a couple good heaters I no longer use since I downsized last year when I moved, you could have them. Probably get busted in the mail these days, and it would cost a fortune crossing the border!

200 watts isnt normally enough for a 55 gallon so it will always be on trying to keep up.
Do you have a thermometer in the water. If its at 80 then who knows whats going on with your heater but if its lower then the heater is overcompensating because not enough wattage.
55 gallon generally need 300 to 500 watts

Okay thank you I will keep that in mind. I thought I ordered the right size but I guess not :)

It has been longer than the return period sadly. Would you have a heater you would recommend to replace it?

Well, my last purchase was the Eheim Jager. It does work as I said, and it is (or was) one of the best manufacturers. I have a coujple of the Fluval heaters that have the digital screen that changes colour when the temp around the heat moves more than a degree up or down. I had three, one didn't seem to work properly, the other two do. My old ones were Tronic, not even sure they are made now, got them back in 1995-1997, still using two of them all this time with never a problem.

What temperature would be best with both corydoras and rummynose?

Sounds defective to me.When did u buy it? If amazon wont refund u, contact the manufacturer and i bet they will send u a new one.

I use aqueon pro 200 watt heaters. Its on sale for $20 right now on amazon. Great heater at a great price.
