i find myself rather fancying some of these, i have 5 ammano shrimp but i understand they cant breed with each other so would it be safe to have some in a communial tank? the only other problem i have is locating some,

The biggest problems with crystal red (or black) shrimp is they are so fussy with regards to water quality and the higher the grade the more fussy they get with fewer survival rates for the offspring. Also crystal reds need cool water, they will grow and survive for a short time in water above 25 degrees but soon die out, so they ultimatley need to be kept in the 18-22 range.
Sorry I can't help you with the ammano shrimp as they are not in Australia, well not the type that you would have at any rate.

oh dear, i would have to keep them separate then, maybe i should get some common cherry reds for my tank

I have cherries, & they're doing very well.
They look good on a dark substrate & don't need special conditions.
I have them in two of my tanks & some are berried already.
I got them from Chris Cook on the classifieds here

There is really nothing "common" about cherry shrimp even when you get just red ones you will notice different colour intensities and even patterns emerging over time.
There are beautiful deep fulll red cherry's, yellow, blue and Rilli, and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head.
Cherry shrimp wont disapoint they are colourful, active and once settled have no fear and are out and about all the time.

i have looked at blue pearl and the yellow ones, im not over keen on the red ones, but i cant get any shrimp round here unless its red, where online can i get either the yellow or the blue, i have only found them on a ebay shop who according to some on here isnt the best seller
