If I bake an old ceramic teapot in the oven will it be safe for use in a tank? It has no sharp edges and has been used for tea over the last 5 or six years. The lid was broken. Internally some of the glaze has flaked off but if i steralise it will it be safe?

Yours as ever

Surprised

The only problem i can forsee is the slow release of
tannins from years of tea-staining on the inside of the pot.

don't want to stir the pot (ark-ark! ) but isn't tannin the stuff that's in driftwood and peat-moss? people add it to reduce the ph in their water so wouldn't the teapot have the same effect on the water?

Yes tannins are the same thing that is found in wood
and it will lower the ph slightly and also give the water
a yellowish tinge.

so is that a good thing? (man i need to ph test my water lol) bearing in mind who lives in my tank (see sig)

btw thanks for all the quick replies

If there are any tannins in the tea pot they shouldn't really effect any of the fish that you have unless you have not been doing regular water changes. Most community fish can handle wide varieties of water conditions. I would be more worried about possible flaking if the pot is glazed. I would also try to find out what was used to make the pot to know if anything is going to leech into the water and contaminate it.
