Tap Water...ammonia

Maybe you should buy some other better test kite instead before I also use tetra but its not as good as other on testing water over all. I have got a reading of ph 9 once in my 25g which I was what the hell. Then I got another test kite and test again and it was really just 7.5. So try to get another one and see if ur tap really got ammonia.

Good luck

I agree with the above - re-test the water, if you get a reading again, then complain to the water company. Ammonia in a water supply is totally unacceptable the water companies are legally obliged to supply water of "potable quality" in the UK.

Are you sure you are drawing the water from the mains tap and not from a water tank in the loft? A few years ago i had a similar problem with nitrites in the water, i used the taps in the bath which are fed from the water tank in the loft as it was easier to get the bucket under them than the kitchen sink. I couldnt work out why after each weekly water change the fish would all go to the surface and look ill and the nitrite in the tank would go up, until an inspection of the loft tank found a decomposed dead pigeon in the tank

Aye thanks, I will get another test kit (different brand) to make a comparison, and if the new one has nil ammon' from tap water.. then that will be (i hope hehe) the kit to use for the correct reading from my tank :)

i do use the bath tap , as you say it is easier to fill from, but i live in a flat and it does come straight from the mains. also i did test the water from my kitchen tap and it has the same reading as the bath water.

Scanned in the Thames Water report for you :)

Pics too large to really post here (had to keep them fairly large to keep the legible), but here are the 3 page links :

Edit: mmm, not sure if it's legible for you or not, but anyway.....

Thanks for the reports :) but they are too small to read, i'll try and paste and copy to word and enlarge to examine them, I couldn't get to the lfs today, dusk till dawn party last night hehe ,only just coming around. ... :S they are open tommorow so i'll get them to do a test on the water :)

I bet that makes you feel good about using that water for purposes other than filling tanks, too!

If you run the mouse pointer over the picture and left click it gives you an enlarged picture. Beware, water reports are not for the faint hearted and you may be shocked at just what poisons are flowing through our water mains.
