I've finally bought some wood (and a plant :D ) for my tank this afternoon so now I just have to wait for them to arrive. However, I was wondering how I can remove tannins from the wood and make it sink. I've read it can float for a while and release tannins but I'd like to stop it from doing those things as quickly as possible. I've heard of boiling, would this do the job? It's a fairly small piece, so I'm sure I'd be able to do something like that with it. Any other (better) methods other than just soaking? I'd really like the tank all rescaped and restocked in a few weeks time, so I'd prefer not to soak it for a few weeks or however long it might take. I'm aware tannins aren't bad - I just don't want a brown coloured tank ;)

Thanks :)

Boiling could cause your wood to rot faster. Try adding carbon and/or purigen to your filter. I put a rock on my wood to hold it down until it syaed on its own.

Stayed*

Thanks for the reply. Would the activated carbon/purigen get rid of the tannins? I only have 1 compartment in my filter which currently just has sponge in it - could I just put some in the bottom of the compartment? Only thing with the rock is that I plan to plant around and on the wood fairly heavily and with the tank only being 28L, I'm not sure I could find a big enough rock that wouldn't take up too much space

The rock only needs to be temporary, and it shouldn't need to be tooo heavy. Carbon should get rid of the tannins. I don't know if there is a 100% guarenteed solution. Carbon + water changes. OR soaking until they stop leeching.

I simply soak my wood in a bucket of water. Change the water when it gets brown and keep it up till the water is clear, if it is only a small piece it should not take long this also helps the wood become waterlogged so no further anchoring should be required when you add it to the tank.

Carbon will definitely help with the tannins, just get a media bag and some carbon, give it a quick rinse and bung it in your filter. I have used this to remove the worst of the tannins before and it works a treat.
