Hey, just wondering what the glass thickness should be for a 36 by 18 by 18 inche tank should be (48 gallon)? I can find tanks with 6mm sides and with 6mm or 8mm bases.

For people who work in inches
6mm is 0.24 inches
8mm is 0.32 inches

The 6mm base is a lot cheaper, is it worth paying extra for the bigger base?

Thanks

Are you looking at building your own tank, or one that is already built?
I dont think companies could sell a tank that wasn't able to hold the water it's designed for as they would be sued.

As for the thickness i dont have a clue, sorry.

Edit:
Just found this in another post i read
http://saltaquarium.about.com/cs/aquariumd...lcustomtank.htm

It's a guide on glass thicknesses for when building your own tank.
For a 36" x 18" it says a 9mm base should be used.

A good guide is what established tank makers use. Wharf Aquatics list the glass thickness for each size tank.

I wouldnt trust a 6mm base for your tank size & I'd want at least 8mm sides.

Thanks for the replies, i will go for the 8mm

One more thing - do you get anerobic gas pockets in gravel? Im assuming not because the particle sizes are bigger, but i may not understand the concept like i think i do.
