Hi All,

While my tank is fish-less cycling i'm just doing as much research as possible so i can get the right fish for the tank and conditions, or get the right conditions in my tank for the fish.

A really quick question i have for you is that i tested my tank Ph and got a reading of around 7.5 and then tested my tap water and got a reading of 7.0.

The tank has been up for about a week with live plants (i've seen growth on some of them), there is a gravel substrate with 5 rocks for decoration, a piece of bog wood and a fish tank ornament. I have Co2 system running and i've also added plant feed to the water and Boots ammonia for the fishless cycle.

So my question is, will the PH drop back down the the tap level once the tank has been running a while? And what would cause the increase?

Thanks

Andy

Are you testing the tap water straight from the tap? If so leave it 24 hours and then test it. Water suppliers dissolve Carbon Dioxide into tap water to make it acidic as carbonic acid is formed, this helps prolong pipe life. Allow the Carbon Dioxide to gas off before testing the tap water.

Ahhh.. that'll be it. I did it stright from the tap  I'll give that a go. Thank you :good:

Also, adding Ammonia during your cycle seems to increase the pH a little.

I have 7.2 from the tap, but 8.2 in the tank... This might explain the difference in tank and tap water.
