Tank Upgrade

I'm going on what's been recommended to me in the past by several knowledgable people, and what worked for me (and others) too. Our 180g tank was cycled in just over a week doing this - so it does actually work ;) While I'm sure cutting sponges and swapping bits over and doing this that and the other is probably the best way, it isn't the only way. If you have no filter media to spare, squeezing the filter sponge from one established tank into the new filter is a good option and does work.

I can see all the bacteria now, clinging onto the sponge for dear life refusing to cross contaminate any liquid in the filter, screaming "Heeeelllp!"...

That's weird then - cos I tried exactly this when I started cycling my 2nd tank without fish. I thought that the gunk contained bacteria. However nothing happened any time fast in terms of cycling, so i diverted into the adding ammonia and waiting method. Still, if it worked for you then i guess that's great - I must have done something incorrectly.

:)

Irf.

Will try to ensure no bacteria are harmed in the movement of the filter media  Thanks for help x
