Hi. I am about to upgrade the tank, hopefully to a Juwel 300 (4 foot, 350 litres) or similar. We currently have a male Ellioti (4-5 inches), a male Blue Acara (2-3 inches), a rusty Pleco (5-6 inches), a small Jewel (I know this one is not ideal but I rescued it from a friend) and a shoal of Black Ruby Barbs. What else would you guys reckon would go well? I was thinking something along the lines of either a Chocolate, a Red Sev or an EBJD?

I would swap the Jewel straight away. They can be extremely aggressive and i would have it for sale/free straight away! I had a few Juvi's once and they were MEAN!!!

I wouldn't go with a Sev as they will get too big for your tank, they are more suited to a 5ft+ setup. Chocolates can get to be a decent sized chunky fish too. A JD would be a nice addition, but this is adding more blue to you tank... I would look at something like a Salvini Cichlid. Similar sized to the Ellioti but bright yellow! You could also look at Sajica's or Jade Eyeds. :good: Maybe even a yellow Convict if you can find one. :)

That was the idea with the Jewel. All he does at the moment is swim around across the front of the tank like there is no tomorrow, but I was expecting him to get aggressive soon. He is only about 1.5-2 inches at the moment. I have not seen many of those cichlids before (local MA clearly does not have as much variety as I thought) so I will have a look around. Thanks.

Salvini's are pretty easy to get a hold of around me, so should be able to be sourced easily. Wait and see if Wills or someone else more qualified answers before you make your decision.

Thanks guys. I will have a look and visit a few 'new' fish shops to see their stock.

A 350 litre tank is by no means too small for a severum. In fact, I would say a sev is the perfect centrepiece fish to add to your current stock. Adult sevs are slow and sedate fish, they do not need loads of swimming room. One large adult sev would be more than happy in that tank with a few tankmates.
