Well a friend of a friend was wondering why her goldfish kept dying on her. So she asked at a lfs and the male assistant said it was because the tank was too big for her fish!! I thought I'd heard it all!!!

I agree. Even with a tank the size of a lake, the fish could just swim in any stratum it felt comfortable in. :p

I havn't seen it but I've been told about a meter long. I know all the fish in the sea would die if that was the case. Load of old BS. He will have been wanting her to buy more from him.

Whoever gave that advice need to be shot, fired (or maybe just informed)
How about they are informed, fired, and then shot? :p

That is honestly the stupidest thing someone can say about this hobby

She want's to give up on the fish and keep sea monkeys instead.

Grr... I hate it when people write things before I do and I look an idiot! So I'm going to annoy everyone....
Moo ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

only fish i could see be in a too big tank are labyrinth fish if they have to swim up like 5 feet all the time to breathe. even there, i think only bettas with larger fins would be in trouble...

I kind of understand what you're saying but......, wouldn't a "surface dwelling" fish just stay up near the surface regardless of tank depth?

yes, but bettas have very heavy finnage and they can get tired, that's why we can see them rest on plants or on the bottom of the tanks sometimes.

Wild bettas have short fins so they don't get tired as much.
