I have a 120L tank with 1 common Goldfish and 2 Cory schwartzi's.

I've had the Goldfish for around 2 weeks, i've asked around and read as many articles i could find to try and keep my goldy as comfortable as possible.
During my various reading i saw that many recommend goldfish be kept around 24c, so that's exactly the temp i've been maintaining.

I did drop the temp down to around 20c 1 night when i unplugged the heater instead of the light :/
I sort of knew instantly something wasn't right in the morning though, as usually he/she flys around the tank waiting to be fed, yet that morning it was very sluggish.

Thing is i'm now looking to add a few more Cory's a brittle nose and a decent shoal of Rasbro's in the coming months, again it seems the best compromise temp for all these fish is 24c.

If my new fish are to be kept at 24c and the recommended temp for my goldy is 24c what's stopping me keeping them all together till or if he/she out grows the tank or tank mates?

Or have a made a huge cock up and misread/misinterpreted the info provided and been keeping my goldy in wayyyyyyyy too warm water?

Cheers

24c is way too high for goldfish. A slightly elevated temperature is often recommended for fancy goldfish as it seems to help prevent swim bladder problems, and I personally keep mine at 20c, but common goldfish are essentially pond dwellers and at this time of year would be living out in minus temps.

Goldfish and tropicals are not an ideal mix as it is near impossible to cater for both their needs in one tank. Common goldfish are not an ideal tank species either as they eventually grow far too large for most home aquariums.

i agree, goldfish is coldwater not tropical and is not caompatible long term with your other fish.

Thanks for the responses :good:

I guess i must have read tank temps for fancy goldfish.

I have found a good home for him/her, but it's been difficult to meet this week.
Looks like it's going to be tomorrow now.

Nope, fancys should be kept at the same temps as all other goldfish. You must have read some awful information but glad you got it figured out.

Actually no thats not quite true- non-fancy goldfish were traditionally bred and kept as outdoor pond goldfish while fancy goldfish were bred as indoor ones, over hundreds of years of such selective breeding fancy goldfish do best at the higher range of coldwater temps and also sub-tropical temps (usually cool room temp) and non-fancy goldfish like comets and commons thrive best at coldwater temps. Comet and common goldfish can thrive at temps close to freezing (and they can also survive freezing temps), but fancy goldfish on the other hand would not thrive at all at such temps and would die if kept in freezing temperatures. You shouldn't insult other people's info if you haven't thoroughly researched your own.

The thing which most caused to make the goldfish go sluggish was the large drop in temperature. It is for sure that common goldfish thrive best at cooler temps than what you were keeping your goldfish at, but a large drop in temperature for them is worse than keeping them in cold temps- such a drop in temperature is enough to cause kidney failure/dropsy in some fish. Ideally you should aim to only change the temp slowly by a degree C a day.

If you are rehoming the goldfish, the sooner the better- although common goldfish grow slowly, they can grow to 15inches+ long and will eat any fish they can catch which is small enough to fit into their mouths.

Thanks for the reply's, much appreciated. :)

Cloudy was rehoused yesterday, :(
I'm sure he'll be much happier with the other goldfish in cooler water.

Gotaa say though me Corys are looking a little lost today :(
