Tank Suitable For Malawis

In the pinned section Mbuna basics it says that a 3 foot tank is suitable for malawis. Well the question is i have a spare 3 ft tank but it is 36 x 12 x12 but that only works out at about 23 gallons and ive read in a topic they need 38 gallons. So is the tank suitable?

Michael due to the aggressive nature of mbuna atleast a 4ft should really be seen as the best option.
