Hi everyone,

Just wanted to get an idea of the general rule of stocking a tank, I have a 350liter tank, how many fish could I put in or what should be used as a guide? Don't want to over stock the tank :)

Thanks.

The best guide (not rule!) to prevent overstocking, is one inch of fish per gallon of water.

Bear in mind that you must use the eventual, adult size of the fish of the fish for your calculations, and that that guideline is useful only for standard, slim bodied fish of less than three inches, adult size.

It should be obvious that with larger fish, you need to take into account the dimensions of the tank so they have a decent amount of swimming room; you couldn't use that guideline to put a 10" oscar in a 10g tank!

All stocking is an art, as well as a science, and a lot depends on other factors, like your filtration, the amount of nitrate in your tap water, the temperature of the tank and other things like that.
