What size tank do you recommend for a grow out tank for my fry..

I was thinking of a 4ft x 1ft x 18" with 2 sponge filters (1 at either end)

Also putting 10 breeding traps in it (that why thinking of higer tank) each trap hold 2 fish (seperate compartments) - this is for any males that fight and need to be seperated..

Any info, comments, corrections would be apreciated..

Thanks

I have no idea.. sounds good though. nice and big and the breeding traps sounds good as well :D

I thought you said you were going to sleep though :p

it's not the best shaped tank unless it is 18inches wide and 12inches high. However, it will be fine to grow the fry.
In a good sized batch you could end up with several hundred young and half of those will be male. Make sure you have plenty of small containers to put them in. 10 breeding traps will be a start. Most people use 1 or 2 litre icecream containers for the males. They have them sitting on racks in the fish room or on top of the tank. Each day they tip out the water and replace it with some tank water. The rearing tank is then topped up with dechlorinated water.
Do 50-75% water changes every couple of days, or even every day if possible. Fish release a hormone when they are growing. It inhibits the growth of other fish around them. In a river it gets washed away and isn't a problem. In a tank it can build up quickly and stunt their growth. Regular water changes dilute the hormone and encourage good growth.

Don't have the breeding traps too close together and make sure there is plenty of water surface where the fry can go to breathe. Have cover glass over most of the tank to keep the air at the same temp as the water.

If the sponge filters are air operated you will want more filtration. If they are power filters then they should be fine.
